Ever heard of Stanislav Petrov?

Probably not—but you may very well owe him your life.

Petrov, a former member of the Soviet military, didn’t actually do anything but that’s precisely the point.

In 1983, Petrov held a very important station: As lieutenant colonel, he was in charge of monitoring the Soviet Union’s satellites over the United States, and watching for any sign of unauthorized military action

This was the Cold War era, and suspicions were high; on September 1, the Soviet Union had mistakenly shot down a Korean aircraft it had believed to be a military plane, killing 269 civilians, including an American Congressman. The Soviet Union believed that the United States might launch a missile attack at any moment, and that they would be forced to respond with their own arsenal of nuclear weapons.

Several weeks after the airplane disaster, on September 23, another officer called in sick, so Petrov was stuck working a double shift at a secret bunker, monitoring satellite activity, when “suddenly the screen in front of me turned bright red,” Petrov told BBC news. “An alarm went off. It was piercing, loud enough to raise a dead man from his grave.”

According to the system, the United States had launched five missiles, which were rapidly heading into Soviet territory. The U.S.S.R. was under attack.

All Petrov had to do was push the flashing red button on the desk in front of him, and the Soviets would retaliate with their own battery of missiles, launching a full-scale nuclear war.

“For fifteen seconds, we were in a state of shock,”he told The Washing Post. “We needed to understand, what’s next?”

Though the bunker atmosphere was chaotic, Petrov, who had trained as a scientist, took the time to analyze the data carefully before making his decision. He realized that, if the U.S. did attack, they would be unlikely to launch a mere five missiles at once. And when he studied the system’s ground-based radar, he could see no evidence of oncoming missiles.

He still couldn’t say for sure what was going on, but “I had a funny feeling in my gut,” he told The Post. “I didn’t want to make a mistake. I made a decision, and that was it.”

Luckily for all of us, he decided not to push that button. Later, his instincts were proven right—the malfunctioning system had given him a false alarm, and the U.S. had not deployed any missiles. Thanks to Petrov’s cool head, nuclear war had been narrowly averted, and millions of lives were saved.

Unfortunately, Petrov didn’t exactly receive a heroic reward from the Soviet military: Embarrassed by their own mistakes, and angry at Petrov for breaking military protocol, they forced him into early retirement with a pension of $200 a month. Petrov’s brave act was kept secret from the outside world until the 1998 publication of a book by one of Petrov’s fellow officers, who witnessed his courage on that terrifying night.

Since the book’s publication, Petrov has been honored by the United Nations and presented with a World Citizen Award, and there has been talk of giving him the Nobel Prize. Still, the humble Russian scientist plays down his role in averting a nuclear crisis: “I was simply the right person in the right time, that was all,” he said in the upcoming documentary,

We’ve got to disagree with him. Sure, he may have done nothing but in this case, it might just be the hardest thing to do.

Went to KFC after school with some of my mates. Sam works there, he gave us free food. There are 4 of us and we only spend $20 for a set of burger but we get more than we pay. 4 boxes of chicken each containing 10 pieces and lots of chips and drinks. Eat till so full. We kept asking him to get us more food and drinks and also cheese cakes. Never ate that much kfc before.

Anyway exam is 5 weeks away. Just wanna get over it and go back Malaysia.

Holidays gonna end in 2 more days. Gonna enjoy most of it. Suppose to be studying during this holidays but really lazy. Have to finish up all my hw tomorrow or monday.

Came back from WYD last 3 weeks, didnt get to post up much. Missing out on studies, been away for 3 weeks. 1 week went to sydney, was really sick after i came back from sick, manage to get fever + flu + cough + cold and i skipped school for 2 weeks staying at home. Actually I was only sick for a week but due to lazyness i stayed at home for another week.

Now have to catch up with so many stuff. Having a sudden methods test tomorrow, I didnt get to learn both that topic and I have to do the test, sure fail. What to do, can only study for the next chapter.

Went to friends house this morning. After that went to the footy park. It was so windy and so cold, even 1 jacket cant keep me warm. Kicked some footy there then we went to chadstone for some hot chocolate. We went to the arcades aswell, won 2 race match.

After that we went back home. Borrowed my friends car for test drive. Was suppose to go get my L license 6 months ago, because i was lazy and busy for school work, so end up didnt get it. Now is my only chance. Probably will be going this week, its a must. Dont wanna waste another 6 months.
We're getting bored at his place then end up playing PSP.

Ask my friend to send me home, while on the way we decided that its too early to go back and we went to the for a walk at a park. It was so dark without any light but lucky i used my phone light. We explore around a little bit and it was so cold, caught a flu there. We're going to explore more deeply tomorrow night.

Whats Happening Lately....

Haven been blogging awhile, so this is what happen for the past few months, went to Sydney for a week to visit my aunt during the holiday. Went to the Opera House and ride a speed boat there. Then went back to school again. Last week I went to Scared Heart college to see the WYD cross, get to touch it and its really fun.

10 more weeks till WYD. Time really past that fast. So many SAC to do in school like every week.
Exams coming soon. Gotta catch up with my studies aswell.

During lunch break, school houses sold pizza, $1.50 per slice. It was a total rip off. First i bought one, 20 minutes later I saw my friend walking around with the pizza box and some of my other friends ran to him to buy some. He say "just give me your small changes", and my other friend gave him 5 cents and he get a slice, im like wtf. I payed $1.50 and now the price gone down to 5 cents. Next time I rather wait till the price go down only I buy. Only way to save money.

The weather is hot today, about 38 degrees, currently is the hottest in melbourne, summer is over anyway..but the weather is still damn hot, tomorrow will be hotter. When will this end, I want winter, its colder. Anyway had a english SAC today, not that hard, wrote bout 1000 words. Nothing is easy and simple nowadays. Not like last time only have to write about 300 words. Just now after school me and my mates were practicing breakdance, im still a new to it mastering the basics and probably learning swipe and windmills next few weeks. Then next term probably join a school dance competition. If breakdance doesnt work out maybe I could shuffle instead lol. Tomrrow going tkd again, each time I go sure theres an injury, last tuesday i just injured my leg and body badly. Tomorrow dont know what will happen.

During lunch I went to the VCD room, wanted to play CS there XD but the teacher like so fierce had to go out, lol. Couples of my friends purposely went it back in there and make the teacher angry, it was so funny when she got piss. Shes like " are you harrasing me?! huh.." lol. she got this russian accent sounds funny.

Lazy to blog actually..just for fun, well had a good day in school yesterday, and went to gym during sports period. While at the gym i went up to check whats on the second floor, when i came down i saw all my friends at one corner looking at the tv lol, its showing some chick in bikini, they were just staring for quite some time. While walking around in school since its so big, i just notice this sign.."BULLY FREE ZONE" lol i think this the only school with that kinda of sign...

Well freaking cold in school today, and we had to wear the summer school uniform which is short pants and short sleeve shirt, should have worn the winter uniform..

After few weeks I came back to Malaysia, this is my first blog here. Never blog for ages. Well I think blogging is boring, but friends ask me to blog about something. Enjoyed my stay here, dont felt like going back aussie, so bored there. No mamak no life XD.

Finally get to go english mass, all this time only get to go for chinese mass coz my aunt only goes to that mass. Everything in chinese, dont understand at all. Just go there to recieve communion. So lonely this morning, sitting alone like a loner, very sad. Then after mass , I called my aunt to fetch me home, but she doesnt want, instead making me take a cab home. I went to mamak nearby and sit there for almost 2 hours! all alone. Wanted to go out with friends but all busy, ordered a nasi lemak and teh ais. After eating, i ordered another drink. After seating there doing nothing for almost an hour, finally i bought The Star news paper just to waste time. Going home also bored. Better sit at the mamak lol..After that i finally took a cab home..

Went to school, first subject science. Do some chemistry experiments. Not that fun, mixing hydrochrolid acid and that stuff.During lunch played rugby at the outdoor basketball court. We use a soccer ball instead of a rugby ball. Its fun, until I got hit by Sean, his in the other team. Carrying the ball. I try to tackle him down but im the one who well down real had, got few flips. Hurt my both knees. can barely walk.

After that, was looking foward for the social night. After school, get changed and went to school hall to dance with the Sacred Hearts girls. After few rounds of practice dance, went out to get some free pizzas. I after eating 4 pieces, I went to get another piece but, instead of a piece, I get a whole box of it. But, i cant finish it alone, Shared it with some friends. After full, we went in to the hall again. Saw some DJ's and the turn table. Got excited, rush in the hall. Then after that, the DJ start to play some music. Its cool, hard bass. There are some laser display too, damn syok. Then we gathered around in a circle. Jacky Chan and Brian started shuffling, damn cool. Then all the girls came around shouting. I wanna join in too but Im still not so good at shuffling. I just started learning it while they did it for many years. Peter is the best, he can do breakdance and also shuffling. He get to pick up many chicks lol. Lawrance is good at breakdancing, better than peter. He did the master swipe. More music. Hard bass to hard trance and hard techno its so fun. Max the korean guy his good at Glow Sticks.

Then after that, we sat down at the corner, tired. Later the DJ starts to play some real good hard bass. Everyone starts to dance again. Its good song. Music is freaking loud. Can go deaf if you hear to long or stand near the speakers.Then at 8, everyone goes back home.

Best Day In School

It was so fun today, for the first 2 periods in school have to help Ms.Kozi to clear the music room. Moving all kinda of musical instrument. All i can say is, the music teacher is nuts whatever her name is. She ask us to throw away all the musical instrument which is still usable althought it look old, dusty and damage. But it still can be repaired at the shop. She is nuts.

After that went to the theater, was hanging out there with some friends. It was the best ever. Only 10 of us in the theater, we can do anything we want. First we play around in there. Running up and down then Mr.Walker came in and he open the PA room which control the lights and sound system. Then xester was on the stage sweeping the floor. Mr. Walker starts to sing randomly with his own words. It was the best, I didnt know he can sing that well. If i have a chance i want to learn singing too.

Then during lunch Ms.kozi took us to MCD, ate a Mchicken Burger there and a mcflurry. So full after that, then walk back to school. During the last periods, all of us sat in the conference room with Mr.Denver in there doing some work about VCE. At first its kinda bored. Some of them were talking about car accidents and train. But then it gone bored, and i start a new topic. I asked everyone "Did they seen a ghost before". Everyone started to tell their own story, It was interesting and also scary. I hear too much from them. After that when i went back, im alone in the house and the stories are still in my mind, got scared after hearing some moving noises in my house. I quickly get my phone and keys and ran to the library nearby. After that I went back to my house, by that time my aunt is back already. Im not that lonely after all.

Today was fun, only 12 people from year 10 came to school today, rest went to work experience. It was so much fun, never study the whole day. Just hangout around the school area. Then went in the science class and see the Physics teacher do some cool experiments

Went Taekwondo Class just now, got beaten up by Craig which is my instructor. He trip me down when I was sparing with him, fell down real hard. Injured my back, till cant breath. Lost my balance when I was kicking him and he counter attack me, he kick me at my chest and i drop down. Lee another black belt guy hate blue belt students.

Then after that went to watch my friend George's basketball match. Not that interesting coz I was thinking about taekwondo, should I improve on sparring or should i improve on my techniques first, my form works and my kicking first. At the end i decided to improve my techniques and kicking first then only sparing.

Freezing cold just now when i went back, the weather is still about 4-6 degrees. Lucky no snow if not it will be -1 to -5, thats really cold.

Outing in Sunway Pyramid

Wake up at 8.55 in the morning, couldnt sleep well, Gary keep calling me to go sunway pyramid with him,Edric and Ping Wei. Finally i get off from bed and took a bath, after changing I went out to took a cab to LRT station and I'm the first to arrive even though they were they one who suppost to arrive first. Waited them for quite some time. After 20 minutes of waiting finally they show up.

Then we took the lrt to Kelana Jaya station. While in the lrt, Gary keeps talking and he is very annoying and noisy. He craps alots. Everyone was staring at him. Then from Kelana jaya, we took the rapid kl to sunway pyramid. Got abit excited when I arrive there, coz for a very long time I never go hangout with my friends.

After having breakfast at KFC, we went to the ice skating. We line up for so long! About an hour to buy the tickets, but when its our turn to buy the tickets, the casher say that they ran out of shoes, fully booked. I was like wtf, we line up for sooo lonnggg and there is no shoes left, got realy piss off and we walk away.After that we went we took a cab to Subang Extreme Park but then still unlucky, the park was close coz they were renovating something. Spend another RM10 to go back sunway pyramid. What a waste of money. We wanted to watch movie but then, Edric say he wanna go karaoke.Then we went to Red-Box karaoke. I just sat in the corner of the room, just listening what they sing. I didnt sang at all coz all the song they choose were chinese, and i dont know how to read them..Ping Wei is the noisiest, he keeps shouting on the mic. My eardrum like wanna tear.

Its about 6 pm after they finish singing, then we went to the ice skating again, lucky this time not many people and there are plenty of shoes. Quickly ran in, change our shoes and went skating. My first time skating is terrible, i felt down about 8 times! I hurt my back bone and the rest i felt down in front, not that hurt. Luckily I met a new friend, he name is Jason, he teach me how to skate and all the simple tricks, he is one of the professionals there. He is a ex hockey player for sunway team.After finish skating,I wanted to go bowling but they were so tired and wanted to go back, then we went back home.

Last Day In School

Last day in school was fun, many chicks come and say good bye, shake hands. I was wondering why they never gave me a hug or a kiss lol. Well anyway, sad to leave my classmates and my beloved school.

Well, its a tiring day. Yesterday night I was smsing with my friend till 1 something, then i accidently fell asleep and forgot to off the lights lol, then at 5 something i woke up and my eye's were like fish ball, huge and swollen, this is what happens if sleep with the lights on. My room light is very bright. After i off the lights i went back to sleep again.

Wake up this morning..ate a piece of roti canai then i went online.Then played some poker with my family.Stay at home all day. Didnt went out.Got family dinner just now. Steam Bot and barbeque. Eat till very full..

Now its over 12...Happy Chinese New Year to all
